A carrier lookup takes a phone number and returns the network currently serving it, usually alongside the line type and the country. It answers the question a static prefix table cannot: who operates this number right now.
The lookup works by querying data that reflects current assignments and porting activity, rather than the original NPA-NXX block allocation. That is what makes the result trustworthy after a number has been ported.
Carrier data drives several practical decisions: routing calls for TCPA compliance, diagnosing why messages to a particular network are failing, identifying which VOIP provider issued a number, and segmenting a contact list by reachable channel.
